our story

Really this should be called His story. We truly believe the haven was God’s idea and we have the privilege of joining Him in what He is doing.

After volunteering with youth in Minneapolis for several years, the three of us grew a passion for walking alongside young people in life. Doing this gave us a glimpse into the hardships that many youth face including lack of family support, homelessness, and isolation. To create a community where youth feel loved, cared for and supported seemed like a no-brainer.

After lots of prayer and conversation with our own community, we decided to establish the haven to share the hope of Jesus with any young person willing to receive it.

The haven is Christ-centered, meaning, we stand on the teachings of Jesus according to the Bible listed in our statement of faith.

Statement of Faith

The Haven as an organization (staff, board members, and mentors) ascribe to this statement of faith as described below. The Haven organization recognizes and respects the fact that program participants may not ascribe to the same beliefs and are not required to.

Theological Beliefs

  • We believe there is one true sovereign God, who eternally exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to live on this earth, fully human and fully God, yet free of any sin.

  • We believe in Jesus’ miraculous virgin birth, death, resurrection and ascension into Heaven where he  is now seated at the right hand of God the Father.

  • We believe God offers us salvation through Jesus Christ as a free gift. When anyone turns away from sin, believes and receives Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they are washed clean of all sins, fully forgiven and transformed, and assured of eternal life.

  • We believe that one day, Christ will return for his spotless bride, the church, and redeem the world, creating a new heaven and new earth.

  • We believe that the Bible is God’s holy word, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error.

  • We believe that when one receives Christ’s salvation, they should walk in righteousness and live a life that reflects the life of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • We believe that God loves all people and that as Christians, it is our responsibility and privilege to serve people in Jesus’ name.

God-Honoring Relationships

  • We value God-honoring relationships in the form of;

    • Unity among all races, ethnicities, and cultures

    • Right relationships between God and humanity as well as toward one another through reconciliation in Jesus.

    • We believe in the necessity of building deep, authentic, loving relationships with one another.

    • We believe everyone was created in the image of God and has intrinsic value starting from life at conception until death.

Biblical Marriage, Sexuality, and Gender

  • According to God’s design and intent, marriage is between a man and a woman. While same-sex marriage is legal in some countries, it does not represent a historical, biblical view of marriage.

  • All sex outside of marriage is sin.

  • The Fall has corrupted God’s original intent for human sexuality in all persons; therefore, all people experience corruption in our sexuality.

  • Simply experiencing attraction to the same sex is not in itself a morally culpable sin.

  • God desires all males and females to express their gender in accordance with their biological sex.

  • All forms of abuse, slander, dehumanization, or oppression toward fellow humans is an affront against God’s sacred image, which has been stamped upon all people.

Exercising Responsible Freedom

  • Beyond these explicit biblical issues and core values, the Haven seeks to foster the practice of responsible Christian freedom. This requires a wise stewardship of mind, body, time, abilities and resources on the part of every staff and board members, house mom, mentors, and program teachers who are representatives of the Haven and are called to act accordingly.
